We had the hotel room an extra night, in order to fully enjoy the last day of the convention, allowing for a nice relaxed morning, an afternoon nap, and plenty of time to collect art, drop by the lounge, say copious goodbyes, etc. I napped through closing ceremonies, making this the first Worldcon in a while where I missed both opening and closing. Saturday started with bagels again, and later some excellent coffee from Schachat’s enourmous thermos, winky face. First order of business was dropping off a sspare Glasgow Worldcon volunteer tee shirt I had acquired somehow at the tee shirt swap. This was a great idea: you got tokens for each shirt dropped off, and later after volunteers sort all the items out the room opens as a scheduled item for everyone to redeem their tokens. The lead up to the convention was the usual flurry of last minute art prep, overpacking, and in my case fan lounge prep. We went to London and saw some culture! Despite the strikes on Friday we had a smooth trip to Croydon to the stay at Fishlifter Manor, where we were greeted by a very welcome dhansak. Saturday we headed to the Royal Academy to explore Making Modernism, an exhibition about four German Modernist painters; Maula Modersohn-Becker, Kӓthe Kollwitz, Gabriele Münter and Marianne Werefkin. It was an interesting look at a different perspective, the Kollwitz drawings in particular. Not a proper con report, but a roundup of highlights; Arriving at 3am and losing a day of touristing due to American Airlines being trash, but still getting to ride the L because it runs all night. Good breakfasts at Wildberry and Cafecito accompanied by Alison, Liz, Steven, Garcia, and Vanessa. Got my vaccination on Tuesday! Had to take the train to Southsea, so I took advantage and picked up a loaf of sourdough from Sourdough Bakehouse and some lovely sandwiches (a reuben and a cheesesteak) from Baffled Coffee. The shot itself was very quick and efficient, to the point that I had to check my arm once outside to convince myself anything had happened at all. John and I take turns cooking dinner, just like before lockdown, we were already pretty good at using up our veg box to get a nice variety of dishes. Obviously now we also eat weekday breakfast and lunch at home, usually breakfast is just toast or cereal, lunch we have together but it’s mostly random who makes it, plus lately the weather has been nice enough we can have it outside. Last weekend we went to the SciFi Ball for the day on Saturday. It’s a local convention which is almost the reverse of what I’m used to in some ways, with the big focus being on the evening events (hence the name) and cheap day tickets to just hit the panels and dealer’s room. While I am all about the nightlife, the evening ticket price was too steep for me at $145 so we just went for the afternoon on Saturday.
