October may be a few months away yet, but my media consumption has been a bit horror-centric the last couple of weeks.
First of all, catching up on Agatha All Along, which so far is a hoot. A great cast clearly having a very good time, feels like a logical continuation of WandaVision but still very much its own thing. The short form dramatic presentation category is good this year, and I’m glad it helped us move this up the viewing list.
Then there’s K-Pop Demon Hunters, which may very well end up on my long form nominations for next year. Also about magical singing women, though a bit more Buffy than Bewitched in this case. The songs are shockingly catchy, we’re seem to be in a weirdly great genre musical era all of the sudden. Plus it has the fantastic derpy tiger demon in it.
And finally, 28 Year Later, which I had high hopes for but honestly is a bit of a mess, y’all. It was lovely seeing the North East prominently featured, it reminded us we really need to visit Holy Island, and there are some pretty good sequences and the ghost of a smaller, contemplative story about unfathomable loss under it all. But as a whole it was jarringly disjointed, the first thing I said to John when it ended was that on this rare ocassion it really felt as though this should have been a series. Even then I don’t know if all the ideas and plot threads work for me, several of them I think I kinda hate. Still, Boyle is a pro, and it was a generally enjoyable cinema experience. I will almost certainly see the next one in hopes he pulls it all together somehow.
