LAcon V: Day Three

Saturday started with bagels again, and later some excellent coffee from Schachat’s enourmous thermos, winky face.

First order of business was dropping off a sspare Glasgow Worldcon volunteer tee shirt I had acquired somehow at the tee shirt swap. This was a great idea: you got tokens for each shirt dropped off, and later after volunteers sort all the items out the room opens as a scheduled item for everyone to redeem their tokens. I of course forgot to ever come back, but I think leftover shirts maybe went to the freebies table. In fact this was a great year if you wanted tee shirts – in addition to the usual flyers, bookmars, magazines, and books, there were a lot of tee shirts. I got myself an Iron Giant one, which actually came in handy later after a laundry miscalculation.

Pretty but very hot.

I walked the dealer’s room with John, picked up some bits and piecies, saw some great stuf that I resisted buying, said hi to Jacob at Tachyon and meant to go say hi to Rina at the World Fantasy Convention fan table but got distracted and forgot, which makes me almost as sad as missing the convention – it’s going to be in Oakland and looks amazing this year.

Lunch was food truck burritos and an horchata coffee for me from a food truck that did desserts and interesting cold drinks. I kept meaning to go back for deep fried oreos but somehow never managed.

Saturday was my big day for seeing panels. First off was one I had only spotted by luck after walking the art show, Daniel Gonzalez had a talk called A Journey From the Reservation to Los Angeles – basically an overview of his life and career. He’s a funny and engaging speaker as well as a great artist, so that was a lot of fun. After that Next was The Films of Segundo de Chomon: Tripping the Normcore Fantastic which was an interesting talk by Sharon Kind about a previously unknown to me silent era Spanish filmmaker. That was immediately followed by From Deep Space to Alternate Histories: In Conversation with Ronald D. Moore, which was very entertaining. Finally there was Unexpected Zombies: Get Out as White Zombie, another movie talk, this time Terilee Edwards-Hewitt analizing the connections between the Jordan Peele blockbuster and the 1932 Bela Lugosi film.

For dinner we went to Finney’s Craft House with the Hugo Girl gang, a ten minute walk which was lovely in the evening (by my standards, John still thought it was a bit warm. On the walk back we got to see some of the Disney fireworks from right in front of the ACC.

Still pretty, but a lot cooler.

I changed into my mostly-finished Patricia from Widow’s Bay costume, which will hopefully be ready for Halloween, and checked out the Lanai deck. John and the gang were just starting to play the Taskmaster boardgame along with a couple of new friends, but the dancefloor called to me so I left them to it and spent about an hour in the ballroom. The DJ was great, and most of the songs played were at least tangentially genre related, which is something I always appreciate at a convention! I enjoyed surprising Joe Price and some other folks by walking up and saying hi in my costume wig – by far the one accessory that messes with people’s recognition skills.

Eventually I went back to the Lanai deck for the rest of the evening, chatting with both friends and random folks till bedtime.
